Advancing Personalised Medicine Through the Genome of Europe

December 4th, 2025

At the Erasmus MC Genomics Core Facility, we are proud to contribute to the ambitious Genome of Europe initiative — a pan-European effort to build a comprehensive reference genome cohort representing the genetic diversity of European citizens. This project will lay the foundation for advancing personalised medicine and improving healthcare across Europe.

We are excited to announce that all genomic analyses for the Dutch cohort will be performed at our Erasmus MC Genomics Core Facility. We will process samples for this project, comprising 5,000 short-read sequencing and 1,000 long-read sequencing. In addition to our sequencing work, Erasmus MC is coordinating the GoE project, ensuring that it runs smoothly and meets its ambitious goals.

By applying our technologies and expertise in genomics, we ensure that all data are generated to the highest ethical standards. The Genome of Europe project builds on the European 1+ Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative, which aims to enable secure access to genomic and clinical data across Europe. This shared resource will empower groundbreaking research, inform health policy, and accelerate the development of personalised treatments with the potential to transform disease prevention and care.

Through our involvement, Erasmus MC is helping to shape the future of genomic medicine, ensuring that Europe has a robust, reliable reference dataset to drive innovation in healthcare.
